Rowland S. Howard (1959 - December 30th, 2009).
The brilliant guitarist behind The Young Charlatans, The Boys Next Door/The Birthday Party, These Immortal Souls, and various split records with Lydia Lunch and Nikki Sudden, has lost his fight with liver cancer. He was 50 years old.
Howard made a name for himself through his signature menacingly haunting guitar textures of distortion and reverb in the Birthday Party, creating the perfect assault when coupled with Nick Cave’s swine howl and menevolent biblical lyrics. after the Birthday Party disbanded, Rowland stayed afloat with his own band These Immortal Souls and his guitar work in Crime and the City Solution with Nikki Sudden (whom he went on to record a record with solo).
With this, he also put out a solo record, quite possibly his best in his career, called Teenage Snuff Film. A true reflection of his genius. Just recently in October of this year, he put out the long-awaited follow up named Pop Crimes. This record was met with rave reviews. Something that Rowland hasn’t had the pleasure of for quite some time.
His dwindling health had lead to him canceling a string a shows and festival appearances he had scheduled and landed him in Melbourne’s Austin Hospital, where he died this morning.
A true icon in alternative rock ‘n’ roll who never got the true credit he deserved. Perhaps he’ll meet the gratitude the world owes him in death.

bingoparaphernalia:

So things like this still happen: a few teenagers are standing on Grafton Street, busking in aid of the Simon Community (a charity for the homeless). Suddenly three older men come along and join in, borrowing the kids’ guitars or bringing their own, I don’t know. Those men are Glen Hansard, Damien Rice, and Mundy. The crowd around them grows as they play songs like this one by Mic Christopher, a friend of theirs who died much too young.

And then - then! - as though the Irishness of those three leading a singalong on Grafton Street wasn’t already a bit much, the kind of thing that happens in films directed by people who think you can drive from Scotland to Ireland, then Bono turns up and joins in.

I mean, even I can admit that’s cool.

(Glen and Mundy had done the same thing a few days before; look at the joy on the face of that teenager on the right. Lovely)

“The Bechdel Test is a simple way to gauge the active presence of female characters in Hollywood films and just how well rounded and complete those roles are. It was created by Allison Bechdel in her comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For in 1985. It is astonishing the number of popular movies that can’t pass this simple test. It demonstrates how little women’s complex and interesting lives are underrepresented or non existent in the film industry. We have jobs, creative projects, friendships and struggles among many other things that are actually interesting in our lives… so Hollywood, start writing about it!”

So this is a thing that is happening on the 7th of January. We Set Sail are supporting Closure in Moscow in bris. Would love it if ya’ll could come and watch me and my boys do our thing. I can promise you that we have been working so hard at this in the last couple of months. Will post pics to prove it.

Fuck guys! I’ll be at sunset sounds and wont be able to make it. Anyone else that isnt busy should go check these skinny boys out, they know how to do that music thing pretty darn well.
